What does Ho Rang Yi Tae Kwon Do mean?
Ho Rang Yi means “tiger” in Korean. Tae Kwon Do can be translated as such: tae, “to kick”; kwon “to strike with a hand”; do “way”. In other words, “the way of kicking and striking’ or “the art of unarmed combat”.

Do you teach traditional TKD?
Our school incorporates pieces from many styles in our curriculum. We have drawn on the vast experience of our instructors to blend techniques and styles that have been found to be effective. We use more hand striking and blocking techniques than many strictly traditional TKD schools. We believe this offers the student a well-balanced, practical approach to martial arts. We do use the International Tae Kwon Do Federation Forms, for our training system (the other major series is the World Tae Kwon Do Federation).

What will I learn at HRY?
Forms, minimal contact sparring, self-defense, weapons (optional), breaking (optional). More than that, you will learn self-discipline, respect for self and others, teamwork, anger management, and leadership skills.

Do you have other activities?
Yes. HRY has several other activities scheduled throughout the year: in-house tournament, friendship tournaments, demonstrations, campouts, paintball, annual holiday party, belt promotions, dinners etc.

How long does it take to make black belt?
In our school, it takes on average 5-6 years training at 2-3 times per week. Some schools promote faster, however, our aim is to promote quality martial artists. We think it best for the student and the school, to allow an individual to mature in their rank, and be solid in that level of knowledge before moving on. Conversely, if an instructor finds a student is excelling at their particular rank level, we will encourage them to move on, to give them greater challenges. We are extremely proud at how our students excel versus like ranks from other schools.

I’m not flexible. Is that a problem?
No. We will work with you to help you improve your flexibility in a safe manner. Keep in mind, high kicks aren’t everything. In fact, technique, speed, and power are just as important! Therefore, you can be a very effective tae kwon do student without having head-high kicks. Let’s not forget about hands, elbows, and knees!

I’m out of shape. Can I still do TKD?
Absolutely. TKD will help you become more physically conditioned. Inform the instructors, start slow, listen to your body, and watch the improvement!

What if I’m physically incapable of doing a particular technique?
We’ll adapt it to something you can do.

What do I wear to class?
To begin with, a white T-shirt and black sweats are all that is required. Take a month to see if it’s something you want to do. If so, you can then look into buying a white (required) uniform and gear.
